Vixen – Term 2 2017

Five years ago my sister invited me to her friends “Girls Night Out” at Bobbi’s Pole Dancing Studio Sydney on Castlereagh Street (yes Castlereagh street!) It was such a great night – We had champaz, a bit of a laugh and we learnt a new routine! Despite being intoxicated, I remembered that night so clearly as I walked away feeling good about myself. Not only because I tried something out of my comfort zone but I felt a sense of accomplishment.

On the 27th June 2011, I decided to try a mini term beginners class with Isabella Owen. Like a beginner I was scared – I feared my lack of strength, lack of coordination and lack of confidence to perform, but I turned those fears into goals and have never looked back.

My pole journey has been a life changing experience. IT REALLY HAS – it’s changed my life.

Firstly, the teachers! The most inspiring women and men I have ever come across. They are individuals who constantly support, encourage and help you grow as a person and as a pole dancer. I was lucky enough to have Isabella and Cleo as my beginner teachers, Roxanne Carless and Greschen my Int 2 teachers and Chilli Rox my Int 3 teacher (and forever the Pole Grooves queen) and of course Tanya Luna Watts my go to for everything, AKA Pole Mumma.

Secondly, the students! I don’t even know where to begin..

I’ve always been a shy person and kept to myself – but pole brought out the ‘butterfly’ in me. You can enjoy solitude during practice time, but the minute someone walks in, you’re automatically greeted by another student.

As soon as you walk in to reception – Renae Harrison, Steph Manhuyod and Lucca Valentine will automatically turn your mood around – If it’s not a funny story, it’s a contagious smile.

Then I met a group of amazing human beings – who are not only inspirational pole dancers but have now become great friends. Pauline, who I met when she was a BPS social butterfly, who I love so much because she has such a positive attitude. Daniel Wang who is the best comp training partner ever! There is never a dull moment with him! Bonny Adler who is such a strong and passionate woman, who encourages and motivates me when I’m training for comp. Alison Ng, whom I’ve fallen in love with because she motorboats me better than my own boyfriend!

The best characters and personalities are the ones I’ve met through Pole.

Lastly, Pole Dancing has changed my life because I am more confident within myself. If I met myself 5 years ago, I wouldn’t have known me. I am such a different and better person than I was when I first started. I have gained so much confidence from pole which is why I am so passionate about it. Pole has made me stronger – physically, mentally and emotionally. If I’m sad, I’ll put on some BANKS and I’ll pole. If I’m happy, I’ll put on some Beyonce and I’ll pole. Pole has given me an opportunity to express myself, which is why I continue to do it.
