Back in 2012, my sister attended the beginners course. I watched her week 8 performance and was amazed by all the incredible people who were performing, both students and teachers. My sister showed me how to climb (with sunscreen on my legs, lol whoops) and from there I enrolled into beginners, wearing running shorts, a t-shirt and a pair of cute pink pleasers.
After beginners I was in Int 1 for 6 terms (i.e. forever 😩). Throughout this time, I was taught by several different teachers and never thought I was going to progress. Without realising at the time, I was becoming more confident in myself, slowly building strength, and learning to love performing in front of an audience. Eventually, I worked up the courage to move up to Int 2 and was there for 3 or 4 terms.
In the second last week 8 I attended, I was upside down, about to go into a handstand, but I was too close to the ground. I foolishly tried to push myself up (because I can totally push up 65kgs with my puny arms), and injured my left elbow, but I kept dancing and ignored it. I continued into the next term, but I was starting to fall out of love with pole, and I didn’t rest my injury thinking it would sort itself out. I left it a few weeks before it was looked at, and I still don’t know exactly what the injury was. I can feel it occasionally, and it is why Jamilla’s are now my nemesis move, as simple as they are. REST YOUR INJURIES!! 🤕
At this stage I had been doing pole for about 1.5 years. Then I stopped for 1.5 years.
Eventually, I was starting to really miss it. Late 2015, a friend was getting married and I suggested the hens be held at Bobbi’s. We went to the Miranda studio, got dressed up, and had class with Emerson. It was a lot of fun and I was amazed at how much I could still do.
In 2016, I started pole again. Taking up pole a second time has changed my life. I started doing pole grooves with Cody, which was so much fun, and my level classes with Chilli. Pole grooves is the only fitness activity I have ever looked forward to in my life.
Last year, I also attended another level class during the week at another studio closer to home, and I can’t stress how much it improved my fitness. 2 level classes and 1 pgs per week 💪
