TEACHER FEATURE: LACEY

Everything you wanted to know about our amazing teacher Lacey!

How long have you been at BPS?

Almost 6 years
What is your favourite move?

A jade split – it’s classic, pretty and splitty. I think I put it into every freestyle routine I do!
What is your nemesis move?

Elbow grips – my inside elbow skin is so sensitive! And brass monkey without hands. I don’t trust myself to stick up there with my hands off.
What move are you working on at the moment?

The moves in the Advanced routine, my aim is not to do alternative moves in week 8. Cody and I have been playing around with some doubles moves, but I feel mean making her hold me with one hand.
Do you have a go to move in-case-of-emergency?

A left leg hang is a pretty move in itself and can lead to so many other tricks if you’re stumped on what to do when freestyling…superman, cocoon, maxi, jade. pike – so many options, so you can hang up there and decide what you want to do next. Or if I’m not up the pole a few sexy body rolls 😉
Did you have a background in gym/dance before you stared pole?

Nope, I wish I did gym though because my cartwheels suck (ask Ryder haha)
Favourite pole moment?

I love when a student finally nails a trick and the whole class cheers. Also when my lovely student Kathi showed me progress photos from when she first started flex to now (I get my students to take photos every term) and it was amazing to see how much she has improved.
Care to share any faux paux or disaster moments with us?

When I somehow managed to tie my feet together mid-performance at Northies. My ankle boots got tied to each other and I couldn’t undo them. A nice drunk man from the audience came over to untie me after I struggled on the floor which felt like ages!
Who is your pole crush/pole idol?

I love watching Fontaine and Miss Filly. I love Amy Hazel for her beautiful flexy moves.
If you could take a class with any poler (active or retired) who would it be?

Amy Hazel, again because of her beautiful flexy moves. She makes them look so easy.
Which celebrity (apart from the obvious Channing Tatum) do you think would be great at pole?

Rebel Wilson. She did silks in Pitch Perfect 2 so she’s not afraid to be upside down and she’s confident. I think she would own the pole!
What song(or genre) do you love to pole to?

Slooowwww and sexy anything!
What song has pole ruined for you?

I feel like I’ve listened to ‘Come get it bae’ way too many times
Do you think pole should be in the olympics? Yes/No

No. I don’t think the value of pole performances should be based on tricks alone. Some of my favourites have been because of stage presence, theme, costume etc. I think making it an Olympic sport would make one type of pole dancing being seen as more ‘legitimate’ than others, and what I love about pole is that we have so many styles to suit every taste. Other aerial arts and styles of dance require amazing strength, flexibility and training and they don’t feel the need to prove anything to anyone. I think pole should be the same.

If you never discovered pole dancing what would you be doing?

A lot more eating and slothing haha

Some non-pole stuff about you…

What is your star sign?

Sagittarius
Where did you grow up?

Maroubra
Do you have any siblings?

One younger sister, she’s my best friend 🙂
Tell us about your (fur)babies…

I have a 1 year old cattle dog named Indigo, who is a lunatic. She manages to regularly tear out my mums flowers and plants (that are in a fenced off garden!), she digs up the lawn and rips out the chicken wire dad uses to regrow the missing patches of grass and she loves to do zoomies after dinner despite going on a big daily walk! But we love her, she’s hilarious and she can do so many cute tricks and sometimes when she’s calm she’ll cuddle up to us. She even has her own Instagram hehehe
Favourite Movie?

Oooohhh Mean Girls and Emperor’s New Grooves haha
Favourite food/place to eat?

I regularly go out for dumplings and sushi with my sister. I love thickshakes from Mickey’s Cafe. I’ve tried almost every flavour.
Wine or chocolate?

I do enjoy wine BUT I’m going to say chocolate. I have a massive sweet tooth and have one pretty much everyday.
Sun or snow?

Both! I love summer weather, but I do love snowboarding for a weekend or two in winter!
Cats or dogs?

I’ve only ever had dogs, so dogs 🙂
Tattoos or beards?

Tattoos. I don’t like the tickliness of beards hahaha

Things we can learn from you…

Do you have any performance hacks?

You have to let the eyelash glue dry longer than you think before putting them on. They have to get nice and tacky or they slide all over the place

Any other advice you want to share?

Don’t compare yourself to other people, everyone learns at a different pace and has their own strengths and weaknesses. If you feel like you’ll never achieve something, you never will – just keep practicing! There are so many things in pole that I never thought I’d get (my splits, press handstand, elbow grip static v, pegasus),  but if you keep at it you will get there! Sometimes it will take years, my press handstand against the wall took 2-3 years before I could consistently do it. It’s also good to try other classes, teachers or workshops to get a fresh perspective on a move!
